IPv6

IPv6 is the new version of the Internet Protocol and it has several improvements over IPv4. It has extended addressing capabilities in which the address field is 128-bits in length. With IPv6, we have a far greater address space (3.4 x 1028 addresses). we can connect more devices to the Internet without breaking the end-to-end principle, create a complex address hierarchy and benefit from simpler configuration. IPv6 also provides an improved header format and routers are able to process the IPv6 header in a more efficient way. IPv6 also has enhanced mobility, built-in security and built-in plug-and-play. In a summary, the Internet will be even more scalable with IPv6 than with IPv4.

Since IPv6 is really essential and creates a new avenue for the development of ICT, every country around the globe is moving towards the implementation of IPv6 in their networks and possibly moving the protocol to the Internet as soon as possible. The transition to IPv6 is inevitable and the whole country should start preparing and gearing towards the transition plan. Malaysia has taken drastic steps in regards to the adoption of IPv6, such as its IPv6 timeline which is ISPs providing IPv6 infrastructure by the end of 2006, e-government to migrate to IPv6 by the end of 2008, and entire Nation to be IPv6 enabled by the end of 2010. Since IPv6 can bring in tangible / intangible benefits in terms of financial and social benefits and also incentives to the country, it is important that we produce IPv6 engineers, programmers & experts in our country.

NAv6 offers opportunities for research and development in IPv6 for Masters and PhD candidates as well as certification programs to train engineers, programmers and experts in IPv6.
