IPv6 Status in Malaysia

IPv6 council was setup in 2005 by Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications (MEWC). It is established to provide the vision, mission and strategic plan for IPv6 implementation in the country.

IPv6 timeline in Malaysia:

ISPs to provide IPv6 connectivity by 2006
e-Gov agencies to adopt IPv6 by 2008
Malaysia to be IPv6 enabled by 2010

The National Advanced IPv6 Centre (NAv6) was established by the Ministry of Energy, Water and Communication (MEWC), Malaysia in March 2005 . It serves as the National Centre for IPv6 research, human resource development and monitoring of IPv6 development for Malaysia. As part of its mission, NAv6 plans and implements appropriate programs in order for Malaysia to be an IPv6 enabled nation by 2010. The Malaysian government has entrusted NAv6 with to develop the National IPv6 Roadmap . The Roadmap will be the blue print that will be used by the country to implement the migration of its network to IPv6. The Roadmap was completed and submitted to the government in March 2008.

IPv6 identified as one of eight key ICT infrastructures under the MyICMS886(Malaysian Information,Communications and Multimedia Services 886) strategy / blueprint to be focused. The MyICMS is a strategy that draws upon the linkages and synergies of existing plans and programs to promote and further develop the ICT industry in Malaysia. It is a private sector driven initiative that would be provided with the necessary policy, regulatory and institutional support in its implementation.

IPv6 also highlighted as one of three main technologies focused by the Ministry in the 9th Malaysian Plan. MYREN which is a national research education network in Malaysia has an IPv6 dual-stack deployed linking 12 Universities and Research Centres.
