Network Monitoring

The term "Network Monitoring" describes the use of a system that constantly monitors a computer network for slow or failing systems, and notifies the network administrator in case of outages via email, pager or other alarms. A network monitoring system monitors the network for problems due to overloaded and/or crashed servers, network connections or other devices, whereas an intrusion detection system monitors a network for threats from outside. For example, to determine the status of a web server, monitoring software may periodically send an HTTP request to fetch a page; for email servers, a test message might be sent through SMTP and retrieved by IMAP or POP3.

Distributed network monitoring is of great importance to the rapid increasing demands in network technologies, education, industry, as well as research and development. For educational institutions it can open a lot of opportunities in the area of network monitoring, and skills can be grown to develop network administrators who are capable enough to keep the network running optimally to confirm peak productivity.

Network monitoring can be useful in the areas of education, training, industries, business communities, and communications. With the rapid development of network technologies and fast growth of complicated network communications, there is very good potential for enterprise based Real Time Network Monitoring (jEnterprise) in business organizations and industries. In addition, there is good potential for jEnterprise in education industry due to the growing number of Universities and University Colleges and ultimately with the growing number of learning communities with life long learning. Since Malaysia moving towards becoming the educational hub in the Asian region, jEnterprise will be a tool to develop the student's skills and increase awareness towards global network issues and problems.
