Satellite Communications

Satellite communication plays an important role in providing communication links to geographically remote sites where terrestrial links are unavailable. Traditionally, satellites are used to transmit and receive Standard Definition Television (SDTV), High Definition Television (HDTV) programs, voice telephony and for military purposes. However, due to the rapid convergence of data and multimedia applications, the Internet has become an important service for a vast majority of people today. The use of satellite links has changed from only supporting traditional media applications to now supporting packet data transmissions in addition. Many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) offer global Internet access using satellite links.

Satellite communication group of USM is a fertile ground to produce more engineers who have hands-on experience on the operation and maintenance of satellite communication equipment. In line with national goal of achieving a knowledge-based economy, the satellite communication group of NAV6, being a partner of SOI Asia Project, has been distributing lectures of various research topics via satellite communication infrastructure. SOI ASIA Project utilizes satellite-based Internet to broadcast lectures of various topics to universities.

Not satisfied with being a consumer of satellite communication technology, satellite communication group of NAV6 is involved in the research and development of satellite communication protocols and technologies. Apart from focusing solely on research, satellite communication group of USM also involves in distance learning through SOI Asia Project using satellite links provided by JSAT.
